Safety note: Refrigerant and electrical work have legal and safety requirements. Per the EPA, connecting or disconnecting pre-charged refrigerant lines on a mini-split requires Section 608 technician certification. Follow the installation manual, the National Electrical Code and your local code, and use a licensed electrician where your jurisdiction requires one. This is general information, not professional advice.

The main difference between a “DIY” mini-split and the rest isn’t efficiency. It’s how the refrigerant lines get connected. Below, MRCOOL’s DIY 5th Gen 12k sits beside three 12k units we label pro-install alternatives (their makers require professional installation or on-site evacuation), with every figure taken from the manufacturer’s own page or manual. We haven’t tested any of them and we don’t rank them.

What “DIY” actually means here

  • MRCOOL DIY: pre-charged Quick Connect line sets. The brochure says installation needs no “specialized training or expensive tools” (MRCOOL brochure (PDF)). The manual’s steps are connect, open the valves, leak-check with soapy water and test-run. The same manual also carries the warning “INSTALLATION MUST BE PERFORMED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR SPECIALIST” and says wiring “must be installed by a licensed electrician” (MRCOOL manual (PDF)).
  • Pro-install alternatives: connections that need an on-site vacuum (Pioneer, Della) or a maker requirement for professional installation (Senville) (Pioneer; Della; Senville).

Either way, the EPA says connecting or disconnecting pre-charged refrigerant lines requires Section 608 certification (EPA). See our Section 608 guide.

What the table means

  • Efficiency: on these pages, the MRCOOL 12k lists the highest SEER2 and HSPF2 Region IV. That’s one size from each line on one date. Other sizes and series differ, so compare the AHRI certificates for the exact combination you’d buy (see our AHRI guide).
  • Voltage: two of these 12k units are 115 V and two are 208/230 V. That changes the circuit you need (see our electrical guide).
  • Line length: the Della, Pioneer and Senville factory charges cover about 25 ft (Della lists 24.5 ft). MRCOOL’s charge matches its pre-charged Quick Connect line set. Longer runs mean adding refrigerant (see our line-set guide).
  • Cold weather: the lowest listed operating temperatures range from 5°F to -13°F. An operating range isn’t the same as rated capacity at that temperature (see our cold-climate guide).

FAQ

Which is best? It depends on your circuit, line length, climate and whether you’ll hire out the refrigerant work. We don’t rank brands.

Can I install a “pro-install” unit myself? Senville requires a qualified professional. Pioneer and Della require an on-site vacuum, which is refrigerant-circuit work covered by the EPA’s certification rules (EPA). MRCOOL’s own manual also says installation must be performed by an authorized dealer or specialist.
